Overheating is a common cause of engine damage and unexpected breakdowns, especially in hot or high-stress conditions, but there are easy ways to safeguard against this. Whenever operating in hot conditions or under heavy load, a car’s cooling system is essential for keeping engine temperatures down. By properly maintaining it, you can avoid engine overheating or sustaining any resulting damage to your vehicle.
What is the Most Common Cause of Engine Overheating?
A compromised cooling system is the most common cause of your car overheating. It comprises liquid coolant, the radiator, the water pump, the cooling fan, and the thermostat, and dissipates excess heat generated by the engine. All these cooling system issues can quickly result in your engine overheating:
- Low engine coolant levels.
- Dirty, degraded, old, or ineffective coolant.
- Damaged or clogged radiator.
- Thermostat malfunction, e.g. stuck closed.
- Cooling fan issues.
- Extremely high environmental temperatures
Observing basic maintenance and keeping vigilant for any signs of a problem with your cooling system can help avoid these issues arising, or ensure they are resolved quickly if they do.
Is an Engine Ruined if it Overheats?
The severity of the damage done to an engine by overheating will depend on the severity of the problem and how prolonged. The excess heat causes expansion of metal components within the engine, increasing friction and damaging metal-on-metal contact. This then compromises the structure of the engine block, warps pistons, cracks cylinder heads, and causes head gasket failure.
Excessive heat can accelerate engine oil breakdown, reducing its ability to lubricate and protect. When engine oil degrades, this exacerbates the car’s overheating problems, and in extreme cases, the radiator and fuel system will also sustain damage. Left unchecked, overheating results in catastrophic engine failure, but if the cause is swiftly resolved, any damage can be minimised.
How to Prevent Engine Overheating?
These simple tips can help prevent engine overheating and keep your car’s cooling system functioning optimally:
- Choose a High-Quality Coolant and Correct Dilution for Your Needs:
The importance of coolant for your car cannot be overstated. This mixture of water and antifreeze regulates extremes of temperature within the engine, preventing freezing or overheating. Low-quality coolant may break down faster, reducing its effectiveness in protecting the engine from heat and corrosion, risking your engine rusting, overheating, breaking down, and sustaining damage.
You can buy high-quality undiluted antifreeze like Gulf Eurocool 100% and add water yourself according to the climate you live in, or buy coolant ready-mixed. Always follow your vehicle and coolant manufacturer’s instructions for the ideal proportions of antifreeze and water. The right mixture also depends on how temperate your geographical location is- as a general guideline:

Always follow your vehicle’s manufacturer’s guidelines when choosing or mixing coolant.
- Check Coolant Levels Frequently, Especially Before Extremely Hot/Cold Weather:
Maintaining adequate coolant levels is essential for your cooling system to function effectively. Checking levels frequently allows you to ensure levels stay within the recommended range and top up promptly if they drop. Always make sure your engine is properly cooled before opening the radiator cap- opening it when hot can cause serious injury.
- Change Coolant Regularly, Flushing the System When You Do:
Like engine oil, coolant breaks down and degrades over time, causing its effectiveness to drop. Just like scheduling regular oil changes, you should follow recommended service intervals for coolant flushes and changes. This is usually every two to five years- check your vehicle’s manufacturer’s recommendations to find the appropriate schedule for your car.
- Check Radiator and Hoses Regularly:
Clogs of debris, cracks, and splits compromise cooling and allow coolant loss, resulting in overheating. Pink, green, or orange puddles under your car are likely a sign of a leak. Also, make sure to look for signs of corrosion or fracture in your radiator and hoses, and remedy such issues promptly.
- Use High-Quality Engine Oil:
The best engine oils offer enhanced lubrication, friction reduction, and heat dissipation within the engine, keeping internal temperatures down. Look for high-grade synthetic oils with exceptional thermal stability, ensuring they are suitable for your car’s engine.
- Pay Attention to Your Temperature Gauge:
The temperature gauge light on your dashboard can alert you to an overheating issue before it becomes seriously damaging. Keep an eye on it, and if the needle is creeping into the red zone, pull over and allow your engine to cool. Then it is safe to investigate and resolve the cause of the temperature rise.
- In an Emergency, Run the Heater Until it is Safe to Pull Over:
Your car’s heater pulls heat from the engine to warm the cabin. Running the heater on full may help temporarily reduce engine temperature in an emergency, but it’s not a permanent solution. Pull over safely, allow the engine to cool, and address the cause as soon as possible. Always give time for the engine to fully cool down- at least 30 minutes- before opening the radiator cap or investigating the cause of overheating.
If you were wondering if AC cools an engine, the answer is a definite no. The air conditioning runs off engine power, so switching it on places increased demand on the engine, generating even more heat. If your car is overheating, always switch off the AC, and turn on the heater to help disperse that excess heat until you can pull over safely.
How to Prevent Engine Overheating in Summer?
The increase in temperature, thanks to summer heat, poses an extra challenge to your car’s cooling system. As well as checking and topping up coolant levels, it’s worth inspecting your radiator, water pump, and thermostat to ensure everything is working optimally. Avoid heavy loads if at all possible, and minimise time spent idling.
If you’re due to experience extremely high heat, it may be worth replacing your coolant with a higher concentration of antifreeze vs water. Always follow manufacturer recommendations regarding this, and if in doubt, seek expert guidance.
How Can I Improve My Engine Cooling?
Beyond upgrading to higher-quality engine oil and coolant, and ensuring that your car’s cooling system is functioning efficiently, some other strategies to improve cooling include:
- Installing a High-Performance Radiator to increase heat dissipation.
- Installing a High-Performance Cooling Fan to increase airflow, even in slow traffic.
- Adding a Coolant Additive to enhance the coolant’s heat transfer capability.
Being proactive about caring for your vehicle’s cooling system is the best way to avoid engine overheating issues and any related damage.
