Changing a car’s oil when it starts to degrade is a key part of proper vehicle maintenance, essential for maintaining its performance and longevity. As oil deteriorates, it loses its ability to lubricate and dissipate excess heat effectively, compromising its ability to protect engine components. Beyond the oil change light in the car coming on, there are some clear signs of an oil change being due. Here are the five key indicators that your customers’ vehicles need their oil changing.
What Are the Signs That A Car Needs an Oil Change?
1. Dark, Dirty Oil
How to know when you need an oil change? Checking the colour and clarity of the oil is one of the quickest ways, as clean oil is typically a smooth, clear amber liquid. As it degrades, it becomes darker, thickened and clouded by particles of debris. If you pull up the dipstick to find gritty, blackened, or sludgy oil, it’s definitely time that engine oil was changed.
2. Unusual Engine Noises and Knocking Sounds
Have you ever wondered how your car acts (or is supposed to act) when it needs oil? Making unusual sounds like knocking, rumbling, and metallic clunks is one of the most identifiable indicators that your car’s engine needs fresh oil. This is due to old, sludgy oil no longer lubricating the engine’s moving parts efficiently, leaving metal components to grind against each other without a protective barrier. Left unaddressed, this can quickly lead to excessive heat build-up and unnecessary wear-and-tear on the engine, resulting in potentially costly repairs.
3. Oil Change or Check Engine Lights Illuminating on the Dashboard
Modern cars typically come equipped with sensors that monitor things like oil pressure and levels. If the oil change or check engine warning lights on your dashboard are triggered, make sure to check your oil as soon as possible. They could well mean that oil levels are running low, or that your engine oil is overdue a change. Ignoring the situation can quickly lead to engine problems and result in easily preventable damage to your car.
4. Reduced Fuel Efficiency
Fresh, clean oil is a key component for achieving the smooth running of a car’s engine and maximising fuel economy. Oil that has degraded and become dirty is thicker and harder to move around, increasing friction within the engine so making it work harder. This can result in a noticeable decrease in fuel efficiency and fewer miles per gallon of petrol. If a customer has noticed a recent increase in fuel consumption, it could well be a sign that an oil change is overdue.
5. Visible Exhaust Smoke and Burning Smells
Visible smoke from the exhaust and strong burning odours within or outside the car suggest that engine oil is being burnt. As oil ages, it becomes ineffective and breaks down more rapidly, causing overheating and resulting in these effects. If you notice any of these signs in a customer’s car, it is a clear sign to change the oil immediately. Continuing to drive a vehicle despite these warning signs can rapidly result in serious mechanical issues.
What Happens if an Oil Change is Overdue?
Leaving it too long between oil changes and neglecting routine servicing can quickly have serious consequences. Old oil cannot properly lubricate the engine’s moving parts, causing increased friction and wear. Its inability to dissipate heat effectively, and the increased heat generation that excess friction causes further issues. An overdue oil change can result in:
- Excess wear and tear on the engine
- Overheating leading to damage to components and potential engine failure
- Reduced fuel efficiency and an increase in harmful emissions
- Avoidable costly repairs
- In extreme circumstances, a total engine replacement becoming necessary
What Happens if You Don't Change Oil?
If you ignore signs of oil change in a car being necessary for too long, the old engine oil can become a thick sludge. Without adequate lubrication from fresh engine oil, metal parts can seize up causing the car to break down. Beyond failing to lubricate properly, this sludge can block vital engine channels resulting in catastrophic damage. Left unchecked, the results of driving with old, degraded oil will eventually necessitate a replacement of the whole engine.
The results of failing to change engine oil regularly can quickly escalate into damage to the engine, but avoiding this is simple. By educating customers on these five signs of an oil change being overdue, they will know what to look out for. Making sure to stress the importance of routine services and oil changes is another easy way to help them prevent expensive repairs and keep their vehicles running at their best for years to come.
